Rancho Santana, a world class resort and residential community, wished to add a spa to their already extensive list of amenities.  Many sites were considered; ocean front, by the river, in a valley, until after extensively walking the land, the site revealed itself.  A pathway up the mountain leads you to a forested hillside with expansive views over the valley to the mountains beyond. The spa guest is enveloped in nature before they arrive and that theme is continued throughout.  The main building contains a breezeway with views through and over the forest, changing rooms, a relaxation room and terrace, hot and cold plunge pools, a salon, and a massage room, all completed in a rustic yet elegant palette of wood, stone, clay, and textiles.

A stone path nestled into the hillside leads you from the main building to open massage pavilions with views over the valley.  Sliding louver doors provide privacy while letting in light and forest sounds.  Private balconies provide a place for contemplation and relaxation.  Showers open to the sky provide connection with the forest canopy.

Unique elements include a table made out of a massive local tree trunk, custom furniture and light fixtures that were handcrafted in the owners nearby wood and metal shop, a hanging bed for relaxation, and a large tree that grows up through one of the porches.

The spa provides a cool, shaded environment in stark contrast to the bright and sunny rugged surf nearby.  The contrast opens the senses enhancing the experience of tranquility and calmness.
